Broken down on the AP-7 or a motorway near Alicante: what to do

A breakdown on a fast road is dangerous because of the speed of the traffic. Here is how to get to safety, signal your vehicle and ask for help without taking risks.

Safety first

Steps to get to safety

  1. Switch on your hazard lights as soon as you notice the problem and, if you can, reach the hard shoulder or a safe stopping area.
  2. Turn off the engine, apply the handbrake and turn the wheels away from the road.
  3. Put on a reflective vest before leaving the car and exit on the side of the verge, never on the traffic side.
  4. Activate the connected V16 beacon, compulsory in Spain since 1 January 2026, and place it as high as you can on the vehicle, normally on the roof, taking the least possible risk.
  5. Move away from the car and wait behind the safety barrier, far from the road. Do not stay inside the vehicle or standing next to it.
Who to call

When to call 112 and when to call a tow truck

If anyone is injured, or there is smoke, fire or any danger, call 112 first. If it is only a breakdown with no risk to people, call your breakdown cover or a private tow truck. If you have a flat tyre, do not change it on the road or on a narrow hard shoulder: it is safer to wait for help.
